Below are a list of things I need for every photoshoot:
- Vision board. So you and photographer know what direction the photoshoot is going in
- Shot list. This is a list of EVERYTHING you want a picture of. Don’t just write down all your products but what being paired with what.

Whewwww Chilleeee! I went to LA about 2 weeks before my website launch thinking I was going to get everything I wanted. Welp, that didn’t happen. This was a 2 day adventure and I was over whelmed to say the least. The first day I got there I had a list of stores I wanted to check out based off of what I saw on Fashiongo. I started buying everything I liked an quickly found myself with a whole bunch a pieces that didn’t create the story I wanted my brand to portray. They were all great pieces but they didn’t compliment each other. My advice for anyone going to the LA fashion district is to have a creative direction BEFORE you go. Create a mood board and write down specific pieces that you MUST have on your site. When writing down the pieces make sure you be very specific as far as color, cut, and how many of a specific piece of clothing you want to buy. So don’t go buying a whole bunch of tops and all you have on your website are tops, is that isn’t your focus.
The second day was much better because I had more of an idea of what I was getting myself into. I was more strategic with my money and even took pictures of things I might want to add to my site in the future. Aside from it being overwhelming initially, I found that it became addicting. I found myself wanted to go back the whole rest of my trip. So before you go buying up everything just take a step back and look around first. Browse for the lowest prices and check the quality of the clothes before you purchase. You don’t want to end up with a bunch of cheap, ill fitted shirts, like I did! SMH! Make sure you walk confidently and mean what you say when talking to these manufacturers! They will sell you w.e you are willing to buy. Now go out and take the LA fashion district by storm! Don’t stress and enjoy the journey!
- Figure out what kind of boutique you want to have. Will it be clothing, accessories, or both? Women’s or Men’s? Who is your ideal customer?
- Figure out a name a legalize it. what will you site be called? Is it going to be an LLC, Corporation, or sole proprietorship? This can cost anywhere between $50-$1,000. Depending on if you copyright your name and which kind of business you file as. You can search how to file as a business on your state government site
- Get a resellers permit. This allows you to purchase wholesale from vendors and tax your customers on your products. This is important when selling online because you can be taxed a lot of even shut down if you don’t have this. This is proof to manufacturers that you will be reselling and not using for your enjoyment.
- Set up a website. You can create a website so easily these days. I currently use Shopify. They come with pre-made templates based on the type of business you have. They also have discounted shipping rates and it’s so easy for not only you but the customer to navigate.
- Market your business! This is the most important step when starting an online business. You will not get sales if you don’t market. Market on your own social media but also set a budget aside to do some paid promotions. You have to pay to play in the online world these day so remember that!
Now, these steps are pretty simple! After this all it takes is consistency. Constantly stay ahead of the game and know what your website will have and look like months in advance. Plan marketing, new releases, and photoshoots accordingly and eventually your business will run it’s self. It’s not an overnight thing, for most, so keep going even when you don’t see the sales you’d like.
